Terrestrial planets have hard surfaces that can be re-shaped by several different processes: Impact Cratering There are still small chunks of rock orbiting the Sun left over from the formation of the solar system. Some of them have orbits that cross the orbits of the planets and moons. When they get close enough to a planet or moon, they will be pulled in by the large body’s gravity and strike the surface at a speed of at least the escape velocity of the planet or moon, i. At such speeds, the projecticle explodes on impact and carves out a round bowl-shaped depression on the surface. This process is impact cratering.

The Radiometric Dating Game Radiometric dating methods estimate the age of rocks using calculations based on the decay rates of radioactive elements such as uranium, strontium, and potassium. On the surface, radiometric dating methods appear to give powerful support to the statement that life has existed on the earth for hundreds of millions, even billions, of years. We are told that these methods are accurate to a few percent, and that there are many different methods.

Penn was distantly related to William Penn from whom Pennsylvania gets its name. John Penn allegedly founded the first Masonic lodge in Pennsylvania. Penney was a dedicated life-long Freemason, being initiated into Wasatch Lodge No. He also experimented with the development of a high pressure steam engine that was more than 70 years ahead of its time.
Navy, Matthew Perry commanded one of the first steam frigates, USS Fulton, which was armed with the new, and for its time, highly destructive, Paixhans shell gun. In a similarly armed vessel, Perry made a famous expedition to Japan, compelling the country to open for trade with the U. Perry was initiated into the Holland Lodge No. So successful was he that, in , he was given the rank of General of the Armies of the United States, a rank only conferred once.
This tough soldier was a Freemason in Lincoln Lodge No. He was the first runner to complete a marathon less than 2 hours 20 minutes — an achievement which was equated to the breaking of the four minute mile. Later that same year Peters set the first sub-2 hour 20 minute clocking on an out-and-back course, at the Enschede Marathon, Holland.

However, even before Edge Hill had been opened, it was apparent that there was a pressing need for another station to be built, which would this time be closer to the city centre. This building was designed with four large gateways, two of which were intentionally nonfunctional. The return journey was achieved via the use of a stationary steam engine located at Edge Hill, which would be used to haul the carriages up to Edge Hill by rope.

Basic principles Parent and daughter isotopes commonly used to establish ages of rocks. Many atoms or elements exist as numerous varieties called isotopes , some of which are radioactive , meaning they decay over time by losing particles. Radiometric dating is based on the decay rate of these isotopes into stable nonradioactive isotopes. To date an object, scientists measure the quantity of parent and daughter isotope in a sample, and use the atomic decay rate to determine its possible age.
For example, in the U Pb series, U is the parent isotope and the others are daughter isotopes. In order to calculate the age of the rock, geologists follow this procedure: Measure the ratio of isotopes in the rock. Observe the rate of radioactive decay from the mother to the daughter isotope. Calculate the time required for the mother isotope to produce all the observed daughter isotope, according to this formula: The decay constant has dimensions of reciprocal seconds.
In the special case in which parent and daughter atoms are present in equal quantities, the age of the specimen is the half-life of the parent isotope: Known amounts of daughter isotope usually zero at start. No gain or loss of parent or daughter isotopes by any means other than radioactive decay closed system. A constant decay rate.
Terri Eva, aged 46, fell victim to the latest crash in St Helens Road last weekend when her Vauxhall Corsa was badly damaged. Now she says she has had enough and is moving out. Share Bishop and martyr. The ninth-century martyrologies of Europe in their lists, which are accompanied by historical notices, give on 15 February the name of St. Blasius, Bishop of Sebaste and martyr. The Greek synaxaria mention him under 11 February. In the oldest known recension of the so-called martyrology of St. Jerome the name of St. Blasius does not appear; it is only in the later, enlarged catalogues that he is mentioned. The historical notices concerning him in the above-mentioned martyrologies and synaxaria rest on the legendary Acts.
All the statements agree that St. Blasius was Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia and most of the acounts place his martyrdom in the reign of Licinius about As these reports may rest on old traditions which are bound up with the veneration of the saint in the Church liturgy, they are not to be absolutely rejected. It can perhaps be assumed that St.
Blasius was a bishop and that he suffered martyrdom at the beginning of the fourth century.

Learning the lessons of Mount St Helens How its eruption backs biblical history. by Tas Walker. It was not until I visited Mount St Helens volcano in Washington State, USA, that I fully appreciated the immensity of its explosion.
May 17, Helens 30 years ago today devastated the surrounding landscape, with the hot gas and debris killing countless animals and damaging or destroying large swaths of forest. But life did not entirely end then and there. Among the reasons the ecology rebounded are some surprising factors, including the early morning timing of the eruption, the fact that spring had been late to arrive that year, and the amazing ability of insects to parachute in once a recovery was underway. Some species managed to survive amid the the volcano’s eruption on May 18, Others scraped by at the edges of the devastation and literally crawled back.
Together they sowed the seeds of a comeback that progressed in fits and starts and continues today. Ecologists have been watching the process from the very beginning, noting what species were wiped out from the area and which still had a few representatives; which returned to the area and when; and what parts of the damaged landscape were the first to see regrowth. The recovery of the Mount St. Helens area was “a wonderful living laboratory” to investigate how ecosystems and species respond to and recover from major disturbances, said Charlie Crisafulli, a research ecologist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station in Amboy, Wash.
This natural experiment gave scientists like Crisafulli plenty of surprises and has revealed some important factors that influence how an ecosystem recovers from such widespread devastation , which they have used to study other areas impacted by volcanic eruptions.

So, there was nothing else for it. You see, Jim was just like the rest of us It was a hobby that instilled honesty and integrity into everyone; that falsifying an entry in an Ian Allan abc books was futile because all you were doing was cheating on yourself! We even tried our hand at railway photography, a natural adjunct to train spotting, and spurred on by the photos that appeared in the monthly railway magazines we snapped away with the simplest box cameras, hoping that one day our photos would be worthy of publication alongside such luminaries as Jim, who by then had become a regular contributor to ‘Trains Illustrated’ and ‘Railway Magazine’.
But after steam finished in the late Sixties, steam enthusiasts became disillusioned with BR’s so-called modern image; the ‘box-like’ appearance of diesels possessed nothing like the aesthetically pleasing shape of a steam locomotive and many boys lost interest in trains altogether. However, in place of the old guard came a new generation of spotters to take up the challenge and so the fascination for trains continued just as before.

At the time that Darwin’s On the Origin of Species was published, the earth was “scientifically” determined to be million years old. By , it was found to be 1. In , science firmly established that the earth was 3. Finally in , it was discovered that the earth is “really” 4. In these early studies the order of sedimentary rocks and structures were used to date geologic time periods and events in a relative way. At first, the use of “key” diagnostic fossils was used to compare different areas of the geologic column.
Although there were attempts to make relative age estimates, no direct dating method was available until the twentieth century. However, before this time some very popular indirect methods were available. For example, Lord Kelvin had estimated the ages of both the Earth and the Sun based on cooling rates. The answer of 25 million years deduced by Kelvin was not received favorably by geologists.
Both the physical geologists and paleontologists could point to evidence that much more time was needed to produce what they saw in the stratigraphic and fossil records. As one answer to his critics, Kelvin produced a completely independent estimate — this time for the age of the Sun. His result was in close agreement with his estimate of the age of the earth. The solar estimate was based on the idea that the energy supply for the solar radioactive flux is gravitational contraction.
