Riders who cycle in pelotons, where they pack closely together as they ride, have been accused of hogging entire roads by refusing to give way to motorists, flicking v-signs at car drivers and speeding through villages. Warning signs are now being put up to urge riders to cycle in single file rather than pack formations when negotiating the narrow routes across the Yorkshire Dales. Gawthorpe Gawthorpe is a small village on the northern outskirts of Ossett with historic ties to Dewsbury and the settlement of Kirkhamgate via the Gawthorpe Lane footpath in Wakefield. For many years, Gawthorpe was considered a separate hamlet, but in , it was joined with Ossett and South Ossett to become Ossett-cum-Gawthorpe. Immediately to the left of the building housing the shop is the Gawthorpe Zion Chapel. However, there is evidence to suggest the village may have existed in Roman times and certainly there was a small Roman settlement at nearby Street Side, alongside the old Roman road.
Like most English villages, Gawthorpe used to be self-contained with a large selection of shops offering every conceivable type of goods and service. There were greengrocers, confectioners, butchers, blacksmiths, shoemakers, bakers, barbers and ale sellers who all plied their trade at the end of the 19th century. In , Benjamin Day, aged 73 and his 20 year-old grandson Halliday Day had a greengrocer’s shop on High Street, near Tately Lane, but were also herb beer brewers, producing non-alcoholic drinks for those customers who were perhaps members of the Temperance Movement.
Gawthorpe Post Office s. The villagers didn’t have much in the way of transport, so local shops competed on price and quality alone. There was still a good selection of shops in the village during the s and s, with a busy Co-op store, a post office and general store. Today there are none. It is as if the heart has been taken out of the village, largely caused by the modern trend to shop in out-of-town supermarkets. Much of the community spirit in the village has disappeared with the closure of all the local shops.

Roads A habitual cannabis user, who killed a “truly outstanding” young doctor when he ploughed into his motorcycle while overtaking at almost 90 miles per hour, has been jailed for seven years. Jake Rogers, 22, had already amassed ten points on his licence in just 16 months , when he killed Dr Alex Boorman in the high speed smash last December. He later tested positive for cannabis and admitted having smoked two or three joints prior to the crash. Rogers sobbed uncontrollably as Teesside Crown Court heard how Dr Boorman’s life had been “needlessly taken and wasted” due to his “idiotic” driving on a blind bend on the A19 in North Yorkshire.
Dr Alex Boorman and his girlfriend Alex Bellard Dr Boorman, a talented rugby player, had been on his way to work as a junior doctor in the orthopaedics department at York Hospital, when Rogers smashed into him as he overtook two cars at 87 miles per hour. The court heard how Rogers’ year-old girlfriend, Olivia Thackeray, who yelled a warning to slow down, also suffered life changing injuries in the smash and that his friend Simon Briggs was also seriously hurt.

The Lords approved plans to give official status to Transport for the North , which is run by council and business leaders. While the body is already up and running, regulations approved by the House of Lords will give it legal status including a role advising the Transport Secretary.
Members of the House of Lords welcomed the creation of Transport for the North but warned it required funding to be successful. Lord Shipley He asked Ministers: That would have a very adverse effect, certainly on Newcastle Airport and, I suspect, on other airports across the northern region. I would hope that, in the interests of the whole of the north, they would be able to follow that decision and apply it to the north of England. That is why we have set up Transport for the North, so the region can exercise real power and make its voice heard on how we can best invest in transport.
